Overcoming the Unpredictable

Colorado doesn’t play nice when it comes to weather. With our state’s drastic temperature swings and unpredictable precipitation, we go into each project understanding that it will often require innovative approaches. Throughout this particular project, we were able to meet unforeseen challenges with strategic solutions and thorough planning. We also found ways to navigate inclement weather with flexible project schedules and met logistical and technical complexities head on to ensure minimal delays and optimal progress.

The project stands as a testament to HEXA’s commitment to quality, problem-solving, and perseverance. From initial assessments to final implementation, every phase was executed with precision and dedication. The complex was restored through the collaborative efforts and expertise of the HEXA team.

January is always a great time to look to the year ahead, but I wanted to take a moment to revisit the highlights of 2023 as we get ready to hit it hard again in 2024.

Earlier in the year, we continued to spruce up our new home base in Golden, this time focusing on the section just outside our building, adding plenty of space for work and play! If you stop by, you might catch us shooting hoops or blowing off steam with our bikes.

We were busy throughout the year with a wide variety of concrete restoration and repair projects in Denver and the surrounding areas. Some of the work we did included coating projects, parking garage restoration and repair, post-tension repair, and window sealing.

We are fortunate to have developed some strong relationships with building managers and engineers over the years and made some new connections as well. Relationships continue to be at the heart of our values and we are excited about some new projects that we will be working on in 2024.

Our year-end “bad ass bike” tradition continued strong, and this past Christmas we did a drawing for our employees at our annual holiday party for this year’s bike, which was an IceBear Maddog. We are staying true to what we said three years ago when we started this tradition— that each year the bike will be better than the previous year! This one certainly delivered and our team member, Steve, was so thrilled to win it! Our culture at HEXA is one where we do our best to put people first. If you’d like to work for a place that values their employees, we’d love to talk with you!

Perhaps one of the most memorable moments of 2023 for me personally had nothing to do with business and everything to do with family – the relationships that matter most to me. At the end of October, I became a (very young!) first-time grandpa to my grandson, Oliver. For those of you who are lucky enough to have kids and grandkids, you know how special that moment is when you first hold them in your arms! And, if you have both, you know how fast they grow up. In no time, I’m sure he’ll be revving up his own bike and finding his own path towards living life to the max, just like his grandpa!

Thank you to all of our customers who we also call friends, for your continued business, your trust in us to meet your concrete needs, and for growing with us. As we move into 2024, know that we will be there for you and all of your concrete restoration and repair needs!

We’re serious about being the go-to company in Denver for concrete and post tension repair, but when it comes to time on our bikes, we are all about having fun. It definitely got a little loud, but that’s how we like it!

So, whether you’re naughty or nice, we hope everyone enjoys their holidays and a very Merry Christmas!

After more than 20 years of weathering Colorado’s climate, this prominent local building’s  windows – spanning six stories – needed a robust, long-term fix. The objective of the project was to caulk between the windows and the building, ensuring a watertight seal. This called for wet sealing, a process that uses a “wet” silicone product to securely join dissimilar materials. The project scope included all exterior windows on the second floor and above, requiring an impressive three miles of sealant!

“At HEXA, we’re not just concrete repair experts, we’re problem solvers. We live for big challenges!” proclaimed Darren Ashford, HEXA Sales Estimator.

This project is a testament to HEXA’s technical expertise, teamwork, and commitment to excellence. HEXA embraced the unique challenges it presented and delivered outstanding results.

First, HEXA assembled a team of four skilled professionals, divided into two groups, to efficiently manage the project. Each member brought their unique set of skills and experience to the table, ensuring seamless execution.

Then, HEXA employed an innovative swing stage scaffolding that would rival any skyscraper window cleaner’s ride. With the ability to handle heavy loads with ease, this suspended platform allowed HEXA’s team to work from the top down, ensuring access to all areas of the building.

Rain presented additional challenges to the schedule and to safety. Both were easily managed with HEXA’s attention to detail, efficient communication, and exceptional safety practices.

Over the course of the project, the team’s superior communication skills shined through. “We recognize that keeping everyone informed and aligned with project goals is crucial to maintaining productivity and delivering top-notch results,” Darren affirmed.

This unconventional waterproofing project was publicly bid and after a rigorous selection process, HEXA was awarded the project. Darren attests, “Landing the project can be attributed to our commitment to building strong relationships with our customers, which often leads to repeat business and positive referrals. We treat every customer like family, and we believe in leaving a lasting impression of quality and satisfaction.”

If you’ve ever worked with HEXA, you know we’re different. We’re honest, upfront, and we love what we do. Not only that, we like to have fun and make lifelong friends with the people we work with every day.  Here’s a short video montage of us hard at work – and hard at play. Enjoy!

If you want a face, a friend, a Colorado company, and someone focused on your success, then give us a call. Our team of highly experienced experts consistently delivers superior quality and gives every job the highest attention to detail – plus we love what we do and have fun along the way!

We hit it hard in 2022 and are thankful for the opportunities we were given to expand our company – and the resources to be able to pay it forward. Here is a snapshot of 2022 in the rearview:

People: Joe Keller took the helm early in the year and HEXA continued to expand. Our team grew, giving us the opportunity to add skillsets aimed at solving the issues most frustrating to building owners. We brought in an expert trainer in post-tension repairs to provide ongoing, specialized, skills training to help HEXA become the Colorado leader in post-tension repair work. Check out a video clip from the training here.

Capital: With a growing team, we needed more elbow room. In 2022 we designed, remodeled, and moved down the street to a new home base in Golden. This new space is uniquely HEXA, and we invite you to drop by and check it out! We’re also investing in new equipment to provide even more state-of-the-art service to you.

Community: Over our 23 years in business, Colorado has been our home. Giving back to the community that has supported us for decades is important to us, and we were excited to have had that opportunity last year. We worked with the fine people at Warren Village, providing the facility with much-needed concrete repair, and the children who live there with beanies, gloves, and boots.

Our year-end, “bad ass bike” tradition continued on, and one lucky employee got an awesome e-bike at our holiday party.

We expanded that same idea to local kids, and this January, we were honored to be able to purchase and deliver 18 bicycles with helmets to North Star Elementary School.

Customers: Relationships are at the heart of our business, and 2022 was a year that saw the start of new customer connections, and the continuation of many long-time ones with customers we’re happy to call good friends. Thank you for your continued business, your trust in us to meet your concrete needs, and for growing with us. As we move into this new year, we are committed to continue investing in areas that will make our services even better for you!

As we wrap up 2022, we’re grateful for the relationships we’ve started to develop with new customers, as well as ones that have grown throughout our decades in business.

Continuing the Badass Bike tradition we started last year, a lucky HEXA employee, Pablo Carmona-Ortiz, was chosen at random during our annual holiday party and received an Indian Motorcycle eFTR Hooligan 1.2 ebike! When Joe started this tradition last year, he committed that, as the company grew, so too would the bike that was being given away. True to his word, last year’s bike was a Coleman 200cc minibike, and this year’s is a little bigger and better!

As we’ve grown, we are particularly grateful for the opportunities we’ve had to give back to the community we serve. Since a strong and stable community is built on strong and stable families, we were excited to lend a hand to Warren Village – a nonprofit located in Denver. This amazing organization helps low-income, single-parent families achieve self-sufficiency – a mission that is right in line with our values. After getting their concrete winter-ready, we were pleased to provide 100 snow boots, and hats with gloves to the kids who live there, getting them winter-ready too! We consider ourselves fortunate to have had the opportunity to come alongside this exceptional organization and give a hand to support the great work they do.

Thank you for your trust and friendship. We hope that you and those you love had a Merry Christmas and wish you all the best in 2023!

We’re staying busy and getting things done, including sprucing up buildings and parking garages. Here is a quick video clip of our crew having fun applying a shiny, new, garage floor coating in downtown Denver.

“HEXA did an exceptional job for us with our parking garage coating. They met our schedule, performance and cleanliness was impeccable, followed through with all inspections, stayed within the proposed cost and daily communication was the best.  This project rates at the very top of my list of most professional projects ever – thanks to HEXA.” – Pamela Coburn, Property Manager, Cornerstone Partners, LLC.

We appreciate Pamela’s kind comments because we love what we do and always want to be at the top of your list.

Hope you have a great day too!

Joe Keller, President

Can you waterproof flat concrete surfaces?

YES! And in Colorado weather, horizontal waterproofing is a must.

Plazas, parking decks, rooftop terraces, and balconies in Colorado face a multitude of stressors. They all need waterproofing that can withstand exposure to wide temperature swings, frequent freeze/melt cycles, strong UV rays, salt and de-icing chemicals, and heavy traffic – all while looking good.

Products used for above-grade waterproofing differ substantially from their below-grade counterparts. A structure with no flashings, no sealants, and no membranes on the roof and walls would last only a few years. These above-grade concrete surfaces also need to resist abrasion and corrosion.

What is Horizontal Waterproofing?
Horizontal waterproofing applies a thin layer (generally between 60 to 120 mils) of continuous water-tight material over a surface. For example, on a flat terrace, horizontal waterproofing is applied above the structural slab and below the finish tiles at a sloped angle to ensure there is not standing water or seepage.

To give you a long-term fix and put an end to your surface water damage, the expert HEXA team uses two types of horizontal waterproofing applications: liquid applied membranes and sheet-good membranes. We use only the highest quality of materials for a strong, flexible, tear-resistant product that stretches over cracks, flexibly takes the shape of what it covers, and resists our harsh Colorado weather.

  1. Sheet-good Horizontal Waterproofing
HEXA’s sheet-good waterproofing provides continuous, consistent thickness and strong adhesion to bond tightly with your surface and ensure water does not seep into the structural slab.
  1. Liquid Horizontal Waterproofing
We spray or brush-on our liquid waterproofing and can thereby regulate the thickness as needed. The procedure is very fast and air cures the liquid into a seamless, joint-free membrane.

Concrete repair firms literally lay the foundation for property owners and managers. That said, not all commercial concrete contractors provide the same quality of work and variety of services. Of course, hiring the wrong team could leave your company in hot water. So what exactly makes HEXA (formerly McDonald Waterproofing and Restoration) so different? Here are the top five reasons why you should consider hiring our concrete specialists:

  1. Honesty – This is an industry where clients are often taken advantage of because they simply don’t know much about concrete. Here at HEXA, we believe in transparency from the time you first call us to the moment the project is completed. Have a number of questions along the way? You can count on us to provide honest, thoughtful responses.
  2. Respect – The unfortunate reality is that many concrete restoration companies don’t even give their clients the time of day. That’s not how we conduct business, though. Locally owned and operated since 1999, we don’t just see clients as another number in the project queue. Rather, we see them as our neighbors and family in the Mile High City.
  3. Quality – Many competitors in the industry settle for short-term fixes because they’re often the easiest approach. However, we have found over the years that these “band-aid” strategies fail miserably down the road. At HEXA, we do concrete repair the right way. What do we mean by this? Well, by understanding the dynamics and conditions of concrete, we can apply the best technology and building methods. Never will we use a “cookie-cutter” or “one-size-fits-all” approach to your project. Our job is to provide clients with concrete services that deliver an unmatched return on investment.
  4. Versatility – Some concrete and waterproofing companies offer a few select services and that’s it. HEXA is the one-stop shop for concrete repair. Could your commercial space benefit from concrete strengthening with carbon fiber systems and engineered steel bracing? We can customize a solution to fit the needs of your project. Have you noticed minor cracks around on your property as of late? Rather than sit back and wait for those small cracks to turn into major issues, ask our experienced team about concrete crack repair using urethane grout injection and epoxy injection.
  5. Communication – Wouldn’t it be nice if you could get a quick snapshot of the project status, whether you were on-site or thousands of miles away? We make that possible at HEXA thanks to our innovative Daily Project E-report. Take a look at the number of personnel on the project, morning and afternoon surface temperatures, amount of work completed, and upcoming tasks. We are proud to be the only contractor in the region who utilizes such a system. With such an emphasis on constant communication, you can say goodbye to frustration and delays while waiting for the project to be finished.

When it comes to reinforcing concrete solutions, HEXA (formerly McDonald Waterproofing and Restoration) has you covered. Get in touch with us today to get started.
